Summer 2015 Book Challenge: June Update

We Were Liars, E. Lockhart, book cover

10 points: Read a book that has been on your TBR list for at least 2 years – Affinity by Sarah Waters (352 pages, paperback edition, 2.5 stars)
I’ve had this one on my Goodreads list for almost 3 years now, so I was glad for a reason to finally read it. I was, however, slightly disappointed in this book. It’s certainly an intriguing story with a gothic feel, but something in the writing fell just short of being truly entertaining. If it weren’t for this challenge, I’m not sure if I would’ve made it to the end. It did, luckily, pick up there though, so I’m glad I finished it.

10 points: Read a book that won a Goodreads “Best Book” award in 2014 – We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (227 pages, paperback edition, 5 stars)
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book! It’s young adult fiction but, like so many such books these days, it didn’t really feel young adult beyond teenage characters. The story has an interesting twist, which I admit was totally unexpected! Normally I can see these things coming from the beginning, but this one totally caught me off guard. It was so well done, in fact, that I actually bought the book (after initially reading the library copy) so I can read it again at some point!

15 points: Read a book by an author that is completely new to you – Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed (315 pages, paperback edition, 3.5 stars)
My friends insisted I read this book prior to our upcoming hiking adventure, so I did. Then we had a nice girls’ night with the movie! (smile) Although this isn’t my favorite motivational recounting, I thought it was well told and honest. And, as usual, the book is better than the movie, just FYI.

25 points: Read a book that is longer than 500 pages – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling (734 pages, paperback edition, 5 stars)
This…well, these I should say, are the reason I didn’t make more progress with the challenge this month! After a HP movie marathon with a friend who admitted she’d never read the books (be still my heart!), I decided to reread the series along with her. It’s been a few years for me so it was really enjoyable. (smile) I chose this one for this list as it’s my personal favorite in the series, but they’re all good – as if they hype didn’t give that away! 🙂

Month 1: 55 points
Month 2:
60 points
TOTAL: 115 points

The Summer 2015 Book Challenge is sponsored/moderated by Megan at Semi-Charmed Kind of Life and runs through the end of August. Plenty of time left to join the fun!
