2017 Ramblings

As much as I enjoy sharing my annual inspiration, I truly love these travel posts. (smile) There’s something about looking ahead at all the fabulous adventures that just makes my heart beat a little faster!

Vik beach, Iceland2016 Review

I did pretty well for my 2016 travel list. I did visit White Sands National Monument in New Mexico (see below), ventured on a South Dakota road trip with my family, and spent plenty of great quality time in California with my niece. Although I did not mark off all of my Arizona Bucket List, I did make it to a couple locations so maybe this year I’ll see the rest! I also didn’t make it to Santa Fe or San Francisco. One day…

What’s interesting is that I ended up in Iceland (see above) last year. Of all the places I had in mind while writing last year’s post, Iceland wasn’t one of them. But it turned out to be the perfect location to celebrate my brother’s 40th birthday. I’m still working on editing photos, but I will definitely be sharing more adventures on the blog this year! (In writing this post I’ve only just realized how far behind I am in travel stories 😕  )

White Sands National Monument, New Mexico2017 Destinations

Arizona: I really want to finish off that bucket list – namely the slot canyons (e.g., Antelope Canyon) and Chocolate Falls.

California: As always, I want to spend as much time with my friend and niece as possible, but I would also like to take some time this year to drive up to Big Sur. I hear such wonderful things about the area, I think it’s time to make it happen!

Alaska: My dad is officially retiring this year and has requested that we all join him on a family cruise to Alaska to celebrate. As I’ve kinda wanted to do this forever, I’m totally on board!

Ireland: This is the year of the solo tour. I’ve traveled all over the world, but never have I ever traveled totally by myself. Someone’s either been with me from the start or I’ve met someone at my destination (even if they were total strangers). I’ve wanted to go solo for some time now, but it hasn’t worked out for one reason or another. This year, however, is my year. I have a nice little cottage on the coast all booked and ready to go and I am unbelievably excited! Here’s to a week of peace, quiet, and breathtaking landscapes! (smile)

What are your travel plans for the year??

  1. You mean I’ve seen something in Arizona you haven’t? 🙂 We visited the Grand Canyon just this past week and we did Antelope Canyon…very cool! I would have really loved to see those beams of sunlight pouring in, but even in the winter it was beautiful and my photos were a hit with friends and family on Facebook. I can’t take all the credit though- the guides were great to give tips for the best spots to stand and angles to take the photos. Some of them are definitely worthy of framing. I’m going to have to go check out your bucket list now to see if we’ve done anything else on your list. Or what we need to add to our next trip as Lee has said he’s already found a dozen more things to see in Arizona so we will be back again one day.

And Big Sur…yes, yes, yes. Such a beautiful part of the USA. My recommendation is to pencil in a little time for hike in Limekiln Falls. It’s just a wonderful walk through the woods and we really enjoyed it.

Ah Ireland… I think that is the PERFECT place to travel solo. Or to travel, period. We’re considering Ireland again for our trip at the end of May but that will depend if the kiddo is coming with us or not. If he does come, then he really wants to visit Germany. Other than that the first trip up is the West Country of England in March, somewhere around Nashville, TN to see the solar eclipse in August, a cruise in November, and then maybe London between Christmas and New Years. Is it crazy that we’ve planned that far out? 🙂

    • I don’t think it’s crazy at all! I haven’t even been on the first adventure this year and I’m already plotting out the big ones for 2018 🙂 Planning is so much of the fun and it really helps get through the usual days. What type of cruise are you guys headed out on this year??

I wondered how the AZ trip was going – did you guys enjoy the Grand Canyon? I heard the weather up that way was a bit…chilly over the holiday. No doubt it was beautiful though! Yes, you’ve got me beat on Antelope Canyon! It’s entirely my fault though – I tend to take traveling in AZ for granted and thus go on adventures more spontaneously. Unfortunately that’s also meant that the slot canyons have remained somewhat elusive for various reasons. Not this year though – this year I will find a way! 🙂 Arizona, for all the summers are brutal, is such an amazing state! There’s always, always, something else to see. I love that you guys are having such fun exploring – both for you and for the new discoveries you make for us locals 😉

I can’t remember the last time I was so excited about a trip as I am about Ireland. I’ve kept it very quiet so far but it’s been hard! I loved Dublin when I visited many years ago, but this trip is dedicated to the west counties. If they’re half as lovely as the photos I’ve seen, I may never come back!

  2. Can’t wait to see your pics of Iceland!
OHHH you will love Alaska.. We sent my parents there for their 50th wedding anniversary and they fell in love with it.
Are you sure you don’t want a companion for Ireland ? 🙂 My hubby and I have been talking about Ireland ever since we got married. Someday! 🙂 Sounds wonderful about the cottage! A very exciting list you have dear friend 😉

    • I called myself trying to keep this year reasonable, but looking at that list now makes me wonder! Oh well, dream big, right?? I’m definitely excited about Alaska! I think I’ve only met one person that didn’t like their visit. It’ll be interesting given just how much of the family is set to go, but at least there’ll be beautiful nature to escape into!! 8)
Oh but Ireland…I’m almost too excited to even talk about that one! Maybe the right photos will inspire a little romantic getaway?? I’ll have to see what I can do 😉
